No files found on flash drive #8

Describe the bug The tool doesn't find any of my saved files on my flash drive, even though they appear on my XB360.

To Reproduce I just followed the video tutorial.

Expected behavior The tool finds my save files and populates the Maps, Gametypes, and Screenshots sections.

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

UPDATE: Horizon does work, mostly. (Some of my saved files don't work, but most do.)

ELREVENGE commented 2 years ago

Do you don't mind uploading a file that the tool didn't pick up so I can look into this more?

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

Thanks for getting back to me! 😃

Sure thing, here's one. Valley of Volleys.zip

ELREVENGE commented 2 years ago

Looks like the file you uploaded is detected by the tool's manage tab and playable in game. image If this file didn't show up in the tool's export tab I'll need to see the "container" file. Use the "extract selected file" option in Horizon. That will create a file that contains the map and all the Xbox data that the tool strips to make it work on PC. I'm guessing there's something in the Xbox data that makes the tool think this isn't a valid Halo file. If you can upload that I'll be able to investigate this issue further. horizon extract container If there's some files were exported but not playable in game check out issue #4 they may just need to be placed into the private directory to be detected properly by the game.

image image I'm not seeing any issues on my end with that file either. Are there any other files that you had issues with? I also just thought I'd ask what release of the of the tool you're using? I've been using v2.0.1.1 (the latest version) to test this with.

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

I was using the latest version as well.

The issue isn't/wasn't with any specific file; the tool just didn't pull anything from my flash drive. Whether I selected the main D:\ directory or the D:\Xbox360 sub-directory, nothing populated in the Export page.

When I used the same flash drive in Horizon, it detected the files.

If the bug still reproduces do you mind uploading the text generated at the bottom of the window when trying to access the flash drive? image (CTRL+C to copy once you have the text selected)

If the flash drive doesn't have too much on it would you mind uploading a zip copy of it so I can figure out what's causing it to not detect in the tool. I'm planning on adding some more debug features/settings to help diagnose issues like this one. I'll upload a experimental version of it here if the files on the drive are too large tonight or tomorrow.

ELREVENGE commented 2 years ago

I made a quick build to help debug this. These should debug a little more info about what's going on but it would still be useful to get a zip copy so I can test and debug more on my machine. Note: These may give warnings about the version number since I haven't pushed out a full release for adding extra debugging lines yet. Unfortunately, my XB360 formatted out 32GB, so even though it's only using like 100MB, Windows still wants to compress the entire 32GB partition. Any idea if Horizon can make a ZIP of the real, decrypted files?

Potential Container letter check failed first 3 characters are (XTA)

The first check the tool does is causing all the files to be excluded. It checks if the file is an Xbox container file by checking the first 3 characters of the file. All the Halo files I pulled from my Xbox 360 start with "CON" so that's what the tool looks for before attempting to read the whole file. Even the D Day map you uploaded even starts with "CON" which is weird since it wasn't detected on your end and I don't see it listed in the most recent log you uploaded. Since none of the files passed that check none were loaded. I'd love to see one or two of those "Data" files. I also thought I'd mention the drive's layout is different than mine.

D:\Xbox360\Data0033

The layout my 360 created looked like this: D:\Content\Profile ID Here\Title ID Here\00000001\usermap000000004C2D7BE4A

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

Hmm. This is quite fascinating! A few things:

Even the D Day map you uploaded even starts with "CON" which is weird since it wasn't detected on your end and I don't see it listed in the most recent log you uploaded.

That file was on a different, older flash drive, hence the exclusion. But yep, even that one didn't show up... I think?

I'd love to see one or two of those "Data" files.

Well, each one is exactly 1GB, with two exceptions: One is exactly 0.5GB, and another is only 8200KB. I'll upload that one here. Data0001.zip I think it's also noteworthy that every Data file has a Modified date of Tuesday, November ‎22, ‎2005, which is the date that Xbox 360 officially released.

I also thought I'd mention the drive's layout is different than mine.

Is it possible that an update to the Xbox 360's operating system changed how it formats flash drives? I ask because I did all this with an offline Xbox that probably hasn't had its O.S. updated in years.

P.S.: Windows compressed that 8200KB file to less than 23KB. Assuming a similar ratio applies to the other Data files, I can give you those too. Let me know if this one helps.

Thanks again! 😃

ELREVENGE commented 2 years ago

Okay I've looked through file the file you uploaded and it doesn't seem to help me much on it's own. Can you tell me anything more about how exactly you got the files onto the drive (was it just a moving a few maps to the USB or is this a backup of the whole 360)? Next When you use the version I sent you to look in the D:\ directory does the tool still have the same number listed on the line "All files Gathered, scanning 34 for potential containers" or does the output change aside from the "Updating from folder D:\" line? If the output doesn't change I would like some more/the rest of the Data files.

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

Can you tell me anything more about how exactly you got the files onto the drive (was it just a moving a few maps to the USB or is this a backup of the whole 360)?

If I recall correctly, because of how many H3 and Reach saves I had, and because you can't multi-select files in XB360 (it's either one at a time, or all files in a folder), I copied the entire H3 and Reach directories, and then deleted the files I didn't need.

Next When you use the version I sent you to look in the D:\ directory does the tool still have the same number listed on the line "All files Gathered, scanning 34 for potential containers" or does the output change aside from the "Updating from folder D:" line?

The "normal" version of your program doesn't specify a container count. The debug version says 34.

If the output doesn't change I would like some more/the rest of the Data files.

I have some bad news: I just tried compressing the other Data files (using both Windows and WinRAR), and they don't exhibit the same reduction that that one file did. They hardly compress at all, and it'd end up being around 32GB, which would take me nearly 8 hours to upload.

Hmm.

ELREVENGE commented 2 years ago

The Data0001 file you uploaded starts with XTAF which is the Xbox 360's version of the FATX file system. I dug around and found the Data files are in XTAF format which Horizon can read but my tool can't. I'm willing to try to work on getting it to read this kind of data and extract the halo files but it will take some time. I will probably ask for a few more Data files or ask you to run an updated tool in the future when I've learned more about this data format.

If you wanted a faster way to get all the files. Look into using some XTAF explorer (aside from Horizon) and see if you can copy the container files out of the Data files with that then have this tool extract the halo files from the container files. I haven't tried any XTAF readers (aside from Horizon) so I can't recommend one if you go this route.

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

Got it. Thanks!

I see you removed the comment about Data0000. Let me know if you change your mind, as that file wouldn't take too long to upload, maybe nine minutes.

I see you removed the comment about Data0000. Let me know if you change your mind, as that file wouldn't take too long to upload, maybe nine minutes.

I have changed my mind I would like Data0000. I think it will have some data about the drive which will help with figuring out how to read the rest of the files without uploading them all.

ELREVENGE commented 2 years ago

I've made something to scan through the data files to help determine which files are filled with junk and which ones have the Halo files. That way I can get the relevant files without you having to upload all of the files. Do you mind downloading and extracting this XTAF with byte count.zip? Once it's extracted drop the Xbox360 folder onto the exe as shown below: image It will probably take a while to run through all the files but once you see "Press escape to exit" just copy and paste the text generated in the console here so I can read it. image

Cool, no problem. I'll upload it below (had to use an external service).

I'll respond to your other post in a bit. By the way, I'm copying the flash drive contents to my PC and then working from there, because m.2 NVMe should be considerably faster than a USB flash drive. That shouldn't be a problem, correct?

Results.txt

I've looked through the Results.txt file and I've tweaked the program to look for a few new patterns and added multithreading to help speed the searching process up on your end. XTAF multithreaded.zip Same process as before just drag and drop the Xbox360 folder on it then wait for the "Press escape to exit" and upload the result here.

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

Well, I have good news and bad news.

The good news: Multithreading definitely works, as seen in this Task Manager spike:

image

The bad news: The executable keeps crashing due to RAM limitations. On most attempts, it only gets to "34 total data files found", and then crashes. Sometimes, it advances a bit further, but still crashes. I have been able to capture this screenshot and these notes before the crash:

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

I've been doing this on my laptop, which has 16GB of RAM. My desktop has 32GB of RAM, but not an m.2 NVMe SSD.

ELREVENGE commented 2 years ago

Sorry about that, when I was testing I only had 2 files so it didn't use up as much RAM. Because I focused on speed instead of thinking about RAM usage with the ~32GB of files you have it ended up being too much to handle all at once. This should be a better balance. XTAF limited multithreading.zip

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

Haha no problem!

That worked, here are the results:

Results v2.txt

ELREVENGE commented 2 years ago

That gave me what I was hoping for. Data0002 seems to have most if not all of the map, screenshot and game type data. If you can upload that I'll see if I can figure out how to extract the data were looking for with code.

Run this one like the others (drag and drop the Xbox360 folder on it) then upload the results again. If everything goes properly it should extract the content folder so it can be read by the tool.

Might need a small change:

My bad, I didn't comment out the line I was using for testing before sending uploading. This should resolve the issue.

KL-notadev commented 2 years ago

Here are the results. It created a Content folder, but then it just closes, and the Content folder is empty. I was able to capture these lines before the program closed.

results.txt

ELREVENGE commented 2 years ago

I'm not 100% sure what is causing the issue since I only have parts of the data. I've been looking more into other tools that have this functionality. I'd recommend trying this tool out to try to get the content folder extracted. If you can get the content folder extracted my tool should be able to convert them into a PC readable format.

I know it's been a while since there was any progress on this issue but if you still have the files on your system I might have a work around. I was able to find a workaround using another tool. image If you still can't/don't want to upload the files, you can

Please let me know if this works or not for you, I'm glad to have potentially found a solution to your issue and look forward to hearing if this works for you or not.

You are a legend for following up on this, literally years later!!!

I have good news and bad news.

The bad news: We're still not there yet.

The good news: There's progress! That tool from GruntMods worked. I'm now stuck on the last step; your tool is freezing. See screenshot below.

image

KL-notadev commented 3 months ago

UPDATE: It looks like the freezing is occurring for the Halo 3 folder. When I just select the "4D53085B" folder, it works, and there's a bunch of Reach stuff. When I select the "4D5307E6" folder (which I assume is Halo 3's internal Title ID), the program freezes.

The good news is, with that GruntMods tool helping move things along, I could just upload the 4D5307E6 folder in its entirety. Would that help? 😊

Sorry for how long it's taken me to get around to this. I’ve had a lot on my plate with both work and personal matters recently, but I’ve finally been able to look into this.

I was able to find the problem files, separate them, and successfully extract the rest of your files. You can download the sorted and extracted files here

I compared the working and non-working files in Horizon Mod Manager, and it appears that all the files that caused the program to freeze don't show any contents (the part my tool is supposed to extract) inside them.

image

The file on the left is one that caused the program to freeze, and the file on the right is one that worked just fine.

The files that caused issues were:

I don't want to promise miracles, but if I find my notes on where exactly the start and end of the contents are inside the file for Halo 3 maps specifically, I can try to manually extract them. That may be able to get the contents even though both tools failed to find any contents. (I opened them in a hex editor and they seem to have data aside from the basic Xbox data, so I have some hope that I might be able to do it manually)

Edit: I was able to remember the basics by looking at the difference between an extracted and a non-extracted file. I wasn't able to find the start and end of contents file markers in the files that didn't seem to have contents (_blf for the start and _eof for the end) when looking in a hex editor. Knowing that, I'm not sure if I'll be able to manually extract the files. I'll be able to look more into it in the future but that's all I had time for tonight.

KL-notadev commented 1 month ago

No problem at all, and thank you for your continued support! I'll return the favor by taking a while to respond, LOL. I too have been busy with professional and personal things.

I'm going to put these in MCC now. Thanks again! 😊😊
