The CALS table spec only deal with * as relativ unit. It actually works the same as % :
if col1 is 1 and col2 is 2 : col2 is twice larger as col1
if col1 is 1% and col2 is 2% : col2 is twice aslo larger as col1
% applied as % of the size of the table, not of the page, which depends on content inside cells and/or width specified at table level.
cals2html.xsl already normalize to %, that should make sens to always use in cals as default behaviour (a param could be set to keep % too for retrocompaibility reasons)
