Curtis asked for a list of diffs from the existing JSONLD format and the new one. Probably a good idea anyway... but: we need to do this.

JRice commented 8 years ago

I'm just going to document the diffs here in .md, since that's pretty portable.

EOL JSON-LD Differences

This is not comprehensive documentation of the new format, and is not a good place to start if you're not familiar with with old TraitBank JSON-LD.

Root Nodes

We're no longer using the @graph node; it's been replaced by item. Note: as of this writing, this is also true of the JSON-LD you'll see on the site—I do plan on changing that, so there's no "DataFeed" (which these is now) and the item is once again a JSON-LD-compliant @graph. It also seems we didn't have everything nested under the graph like we should have, so that will also change. Sigh.

The Item

We've added @type and dateModified to comply with a DataFeedItem.

We're using scientificName instead of dwc:scientificName.

The Traits

The traits have moved to their own traits node, rather than being found off of the root.

The @id has changed from something like "http://eol.org/resources/704/measurements/basalmetrate10" (which was non-navigable, and has moved to eol:traitUri, see below) to something more like "http://eol.org/pages/58436/data#data_point_8827082", which should be a navigable URL to the trait in question.

We've removed the dwc:taxonID, which was redundant.

We've removed the data_point_uri_id, which you could use to build what we're now using as the ID, but that's not required anymore (and was entirely undocumented).

What was in dc:source might now either be a string of normal text OR a URL to a resource from which the trait was drawn. Note: In the future, it should only be the string... but for now, it could be either.

We've added a eol:traitUri to preserve what was the old ID (and it is a unique identifier used internally)...

Everything else should look pretty much the same as it did.

Example (of a single trait):

{
   "@id": "http://eol.org/pages/4258094/data#data_point_8261792",
   "eol:traitUri": "http://eol.org/resources/692/measurements/22de244514271c1a8052adf835eee976",
   "@type": "dwc:MeasurementOrFact",
   "predicate": "water temperature",
   "dwc:measurementType": "http://eol.org/schema/terms/SeawaterTemperature",
   "value": "17.4",
   "units": "degrees Celsius",
   "eol:dataPointId": 8261792,
   "dc:source": "http://eol.org/resources/692",
   "dwc:individualCount": "2",
   "eolterms:statisticalMethod": "http://semanticscience.org/resource/SIO_001114",
   "dwc:measurementValue": "17.4",
   "dwc:measurementUnit": "http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/UO_0000027",
   "dwc:scientificName": "Munida sao Macpherson, 1994",
   "dwc:eventDate": "1985-09-19 10:00:00+00 to 1985-09-19 10:00:00+00"
}

Other Child Nodes

We've added a potentialAction for clicking on the item and going to the taxon page (not the data tab, for what it's worth—we might change this later).

We've added a whole sameAs section with links to external sites used to compile the data. ...This is actually pretty cool; you should look at it. ;) It includes a bunch of external identifiers that should be of use to many.

All of the common names have been moved from one node each to a grouped node called vernacularNames. The format here is different, too. The redundant link to the page has been removed, and each name has a @language rather than having the language as a key. Note: this is lacking source information, and we'll probably add that, later.

Curtis just emailed this file as a request for the format to put things in.

Ugh; I don't see anything different about that besides the lack of indentation and quotes. With one small exception: adding the @vocab, which is minor and do-able. I'll ask.

Update: I just heard that the main point was the position of the @context and the fact that the DataFeedItem is in a DataFeed. ...comments that were the result of the quirky sample I'd given them; it should already adhere to those changes.

They do not intend the spacing to be flush-left; that was a mistake in copy/paste.

I'm still asking about the lack of quotes around the keys, though I suspect we'll keep the quotes (it's valid JSON—omitting them is technically not).
