OKAY... for future reference: when adding a collection item fails, the first thing to check is the error log on that machine. If it shows "Lock obtain timed out", Solr is dead.
Okay, well, the usual site-take-down-restart-solr should work here, but this is happening about once every two weeks or so, which is troubling.
