Pascal, this is really great that you've found a solution to this issue :-) Yes that would be great to support both pyside and pyqt. For now, I would like to only support pyqt because I've not enough time to support both. However, I'm going to open an issue to keep track of this wish.
I also observed the crash you describe with the pyside version. This is why I switched (temporarily) to pyqt This crash seems to be purely related to a pyside bug and at this point in time pyside development is stalled. As far as I know a "new" pyside team is building up and works on a debugged version of pyside. So wait and see on that front...
