Update on NumFocus/ESIP? #7

Open rsignell-usgs opened 5 years ago

rsignell-usgs commented 5 years ago

@abburgess , what ever happened here?
Did some of these get submitted? Did some of these get funded?

esip-lab commented 5 years ago

Thanks for the ping @rsignell-usgs. Our first go-around didn't get any proposals, i.e. the ideas submitted by ESIP didn't result in any NUMfocus developers submitting a proposal.

I'll take the https://github.com/ESIPFed/NUMfocusFallDev/issues/3 revival as a success, but I wonder if others have feedback about how better to entice NUMfocus developers to submit. One challenge I see is 'our' ideas lining up with the limited resources of projects. NUMfocus is soliciting feedback from projects and I'm in the process of reaching out as well.

@abburgess - we submitted some feedback to NumFOCUS as to why the xarray team didn't submit any proposals. I'd be happy to talk to you more about that offline as well.

Thanks for the information @abburgess. We, conda-forge, had no idea what was the next step after issue #5. We had the impression that a vote or something was going to decide which proposals should be submitted. Also, we had no information on how to submit the ESIP proposal to NumFOCUS. Was it via the same form as the regular proposals?

esip-lab commented 5 years ago

Thanks for the feedback @ocefpaf. It was my impression that the call for NUMfocus proposals would explain the submission process, which to my understanding was that projects would take one of the submitted ideas and submit a proposal directly to NUMfocus. If Conda-Forge is still interested in submitting a proposal related to #5 , please let me know!
