Italian PayPal link, should be English or international #108

Hi,

Thank you for making it so easy and straightforward to contact you.

In Edit This Cookie's settings, when donating, the "to enter the amount by hand click here" link takes me to the Italian version of PayPal. I don't speak that language and had a bit of trouble filling in the form. Should probably change it to point to English or international PayPal (auto language based on IP address). I was unable to find a language change option on the Italian PayPal site (what are they thinking leaving something like that out...) so I had to do everything in Italian. It was challenging and fun to do -- for me -- but others might have been turned away by 'it'.

I tried editing the URL from paypal.com/it/ to just paypal.com/ or paypal.com/en/ but the language is stuck on Italian now. Not even Edit This Cookie was able to reset it to English. (Need a search in cookie values too, not just titles...) Though I am sure wiping all cookies would have reset the language too.

I understood I have to click "Continua" after the part about "Puoi usare la tua carta di credito" (for credit card users), but had no idea Indirizzo di fatturazione means billing address and would never have guessed to look for the USA under S, for "Stati Uniti". I love languages and have learned all these new words now of course :)

With so few people willing to donate, we programmers need to do everything in our power to make the experience for them as smooth and convenient as possible. Lest they change their minds mid-process due to frustrating circumstances.

Thank you for your very useful extension. Fixed many broken sites with it, inducing various Google oversights and YouTube annoyances.

Sincerely, Daniel "3ICE" Berezvai

Also here: http://www.editthiscookie.com/contribute/ the PayPal button takes me to their Italian site.

The URL https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr loaded first, I'm assuming with a POST request. (Not sure how that works better than a direct link.)

Update one year later:

After the site's redesign, this issue is still not fixed.

No change at all: Everything looks completely different, but clicking the new PayPal button still has the old button's issue of pointing to a webpage in italian.

Hi,

I randomly remembered this email I sent you 6 years ago and decided to do a follow up check. Unfortunately I found the PayPal links are still in Italian with version 1.4.3. (I just updated to it now.) Some design changes (I see now there's a slider, that's probably new), but the mechanism itself is still the same, still generates an Italian PayPal link, (or should I say form).

Even the new website's contribute page links to Italian PayPal now: http://www.editthiscookie.com/contribute/ And that's not even the fancy dynamic "choose your own price" script, just a plain donate button, which could be easily reprogrammed to not be forced-Italian.

Your extension, EditThisCookie, is still immensely useful to me, so thank you for the continued development. Please make it more convenient for us to give you some well deserved money. While the Italian language interface did not ultimately stop me, it did force me to use Google translate to figure out which buttons to click on to finalize the transaction, and which fields needed what kind of credit card information. These additional unnecessary language barriers or "hoops to jump through" could be a turn off point for some of your would-be donors who are perhaps less tolerant toward foreign languages. Also PayPal probably charges additional Italian rates/taxes from all your supporters, instead of just the standard international transfer fee, if you continue to make us use it in localized, Italian version.

Also, I googled around for this issue and found I've made my own bug report in 2015 at https://github.com/fcapano/Edit-This-Cookie/issues/108 I think I will bump it with a copy of this email.

p.s.: Apologies if this email reaches you more than once. I've CC'd an other email address of yours to be sure. And of course Github will probably send a third copy... (But they say; Two is better than none! So then three is: "alle guten Dinge ist drei" / "három a magyar igazság")

2012/11/25 Daniel 3ICE Berezvai Hi (or should I say ciao),

You link to the Italian version of Paypal in the Edit This Cookie → Options → Support us → Donations area. Both the "Contribute" button and the "(to enter the amount by hand click here)" link are affected.

I don't speak Italian, and neither do many others who use your extension. It might confuse some people to see a non-English page. It is best to avoid the situation.

So I suggest removing all language-specific settings from the url (for example paypal.com/it/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=...) and let Paypal choose the best available language for each visitor automatically, based on their location.

You might need to generate a new set of donation links to achieve this as the language appears to be saved in the session or dispatch parameter(s) too. A recent change that I discovered to my great dismay just now..

Paypal is overly considerate in this situation; they don't forcefully overwrite the donation recipient's wishes regarding UI language. So it falls to you to make the change.

Sincerely, Daniel "3ICE" Berezvai

p.s.: Edit This Cookie is awesome!
