Thank you but I don't want Makefiles being responsible for simple package management. While I consider the install target itself as mostly justified for convenience sake, it additionally has purpose in maintaining any relative relationships between files and their locations.
I still believe there is a place for independent package management and their maintainers and that this is the role it should undertake despite what GNU's standard conventions suggest.
