Performance and other fixes #155

This branch contains some fixes for issues listed in the ROADMAP Also, quite some effort was made to speed up certain GUI operations.

Something seems to have broken the ability to change the variables on multi-layer in the sample page.

Note, that I am able to "Duplicate layer" but not delete or move layers or change the values that are greyed out.
