State of the Repo 2022 #6672

The free-programming-books repo on GitHub continued to grow in 2021. As of January 13, 2022, it has 219,041 stars, second most of all repos on Github and up 28% from last year. The repo has been forked 46,090 times, and it added another 934 commits from 476 individuals in 2021. 1,921 people in total have supported the project with improvements.

Hacktoberfest was fun for us this year. We received 943 improvement submissions in October and merged 720 of them. This yield was improved compared to last year (559 merged of 1,314). The better yield is probably due to some better tools for submitters and reviewers, stricter rules from Hacktoberfest about abuse, and some GREAT volunteer work. We had 383 different contributors in October, as well as some new donors via the GitHub sponsors program.

We continue to evolve the list to deal with its growth. We split the english books list into a by-subjects list and a by-languages list. We added so many translated documentation files that we had to move them into a subdirectory. In the coming months, we'll be adding a databaseless search facility implemented in react.

On behalf of the free-programming-books users around the world, I'd like to once again thank every author, programmer or educator who has allowed their works to be free for all to use. Together we can bring the world closer together with knowledge and opportunity.

@eshellman for the Free Ebook Foundation.
