I'm not sure we have these quite correct and want to revisit.

(In particular, Ahlström et al 2012 show predictions of a weakening of the sink strength of the biome from 1961–90 to 2071–100 under RCP8.5. I think the accuracy of some statements may be dependent upon time frame and RCP.)

Summary of relevant lit:

• At least some models (LPJ, LPJ-Guess, CABLE-POP) show increasing temperate deciduous biomass 2001-2010, and attribute some of this increase to global change drivers (Pugh et al. 2019)
• Ahlström et al 2012 show predictions of a weakening of the sink strength of the biome from 1961–90 to 2071–100 under RCP8.5. They predict decreases in spring NEE (increased C uptake) and increases in summer NEE (decreased C uptake) that partially cancel, resulting in net increases in annual NEE (up to ~50 g C m-2 yr-1 at 40° latitude, or maybe ~100 g C m-2 yr-1 in our study region)
• richardson_terrestrial_2012 assesses the performance of terrestrial biosphere models in capturing phenology, finds that they predict earlier start & later end to growing season, and over-predict C sequestration in spring and fall
