But the cited Johnson study is in CA, so something is wrong here.
The Johnston et al paper is one by Miriam Johnston that was under revision at the time of our submission.

As for the wording, the study was in California, so that should be changed to something like the following:

Even if this study is still in review/revision, let's just put in the latest reference and hope it's cite-able by the time we get to the proof stage. I definitely want to be able to cite it.

We cite Johnson et al. 2020 in a few places, but this is actually an AGU abstract (https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020AGUFMB088...03J/abstract) and can't be cited. I tried searching for a publication but didn't find one-- perhaps I'm missing one? Or perhaps there's one on the way? We need to either get a paper citation or remove this content.
