You are correct that the app randomly chooses colors for newly opened layers. You are also correct that I have chosen a default color (red) for edits. However, you can change the color of editing layers or base layers by right clicking the layer name in the layer list panel and choosing "Symbology." Your choices should stay the same throughout your session (I spent a lot of time debugging this, so let me know if you find something I missed). In addition your choice of colors will be saved with the scenario, and the scenario will reopen with your chosen colors.
Is it difficult to fix the default color for point features? By "fix" I mean that crossings would always be a particular color unless the user changes it. It could address the symbology comment using color instead of symbol shape. And it would avoid problems with not being able to visually distinguish selected features (yellow) or new features (red) when the base color rotates to these colors.
OK. This is done. We have the ability to choose whatever default colors we want for newly opened layers. I've only chosen 6 or 7 colors at this point, but I'm planning to look into it and see if there is a way to mathematically choose colors with high contrast to the colors of our base layers. I'm also planning to make a grayscale version of the base traffic layer so that the default color (red) for editing layer features shows up better. Let me know if there is some reason it needs to be red.

It appears that changes to culverts/bridges points, both added points and modified points are displayed in red. It appears that each time I select the edit_scenario(points) type and choose culverts/bridges the default color for displaying culverts/bridges in the base layer (base_culverts_bridges) changes (i.e. when I remove the layers and then reload them by choosing edit_scenario(points)). One time the default color was red. As a result when I added a point it was the same color (red) as all the other culverts and bridges displayed in the base layer. It seems like it might be best to have the color for base culverts/bridges be fixed. At a minimum it should never be the same color as added/modified culverts/bridges (red). It appears to also be the case with dams.
