after setting up the production server on dionysus we will need to evaluate whether this is the appropriate solution or whether we should switch to aws...

It doesn't look like the tool will be used by everyone at the convening simultaneously .. rather it looks like a few people at a time, maybe just one at a time. So dionysus might be fine and AWS might be overkill.

With a possible release at Rio+20, we should really revisit this and determine

how much traffic we are expecting / hoping for
how much server we'd need to handle that load
how much risk tolerance we're willing to accept in case of spikes (i.e. how much are we willing to invest to avoid the app failing at a critical time)

Critical lesson learned today - just taking a backup of the production database almost brought the entire production server to it's knees (Load average of 3+ with 2 cpus, all apps became non-responsive). The backup had to be aborted. Not sure what was going on with that one.
