Should I issue two different PRs, one for trimming trailing whitespaces and one for the actual implementation?

Follow our format & code style in your own submitted new code but please don't worry about whitespace and formatting issues in other people's code in our codebase. I'd prefer to only take substantive PRs. We can revisit that later with you as I get more comfortable with your submissions.

ok, looking through this PR, it's dominated by cosmetic changes. Please give me a PR that has a single substantive added feature at a time, without reformatting our code. Thanks.
