Haste cap of 80% is Wings of the Goddess Era #5003

Prior to Wings of the Goddess Expansion the only job who could reach above 80% haste was DRK. DRK gets access to Desperate Blows which allowed them to gain 15% JA Haste for the 30 second duration of Last Resort which stacked with Hasso for 25% JA Haste. Which means DRK could get 43.75%+25%+25% for 93.75% Haste with a 2handed weapon only. Hasso does not work with Kraken Club, Merc Kris, or Ridill so this did not change anything for those weapons.

for only 30 seconds with soul voice marchs DRK could reach this extreme high haste tier.

Apocalypse could reach above 80% for 30 seconds while Last resort was active without Soul Voice. 25% gear + 25% JA + 15% haste + Adv march 9.375% + Victory March 10.9375% = 85%

So for many years SE was fine with only DRK being able to reach these high tiers of haste in very specific circumstances.

VersionUpdate(10/20/2007) Wings of The Goddess Release - Haste Cap still remained 93.75% Haste Samba added 5% JA Haste, accessible for All jobs. 1 Hand jobs can now get previously impossible to get JA Haste.

DRK remained the same capping at 93.75% haste.

More DDs could now go over 80% 2 Hand DDs /SAM - Haste Samba 5% + Hasso 10% + 25% Gear haste + 43.75% Magic haste = 83.75%

NIN Original Delay (1 - Haste%) (1 - DW%) For example, if you're swinging a pair of 227 Delay Fudos with 35% DW (Job trait 25 + Suppanomimi 5 + AF body 5) and Max Haste 43.75 + Gear Haste 25% + Haste Samba 5% , your final Delay (per weapon) is 227 0.65 0.2625 = 38.7 Delay 83% total delay reduction

These jobs could now reach this high haste tier for the entire duration of Soul Voice. This was a huge damage increase for these other jobs at that high level of haste and for longer than the 30 seconds Last Resort duration limited DRK to.

VersionUpdate(03/11/2008) A maximum limit has been placed on the total amount of bonus attack speed that can be gained from a combination of spells, abilities, and items. 80% Haste Cap added

VersionUpdate(06/10/2008) The cap for all job-specific Group 2 merit point categories has been increased. All Group 2 limits have been raised from the previous total of 6 points to 10 points, and the limits for individual spells and abilities within Group 2 from 3 points to 5 points.

This now meant that DRK could now /WAR or /MNK and still reach the high tier of haste. It didn't change the over all haste cap for anyone.

After all this time with a uncapped haste it was not till Haste Samba was added to the game that they had to impose a cap. It wasn't till much later they nerfed DRK zerging directly where they made many NMS have an innate resistance to Souleater. This wasn't a nerf to zerging because the 1hand zerg was still possible. It was a direct nerf to overall haste because of the job balance change DNC imposed and other WoTG Job Abilities. It was an indirect nerf to Apocs in the process. We don't have DNC or haste samba so no other job can get above 80% haste.

We now currently have a haste cap to impose a nerf on DRKs and Apocs that SE never did directly till much later. This Haste Cap is out of era.

Just reminded me that there was a thing with retail ranger where if you stacked enough RATT on sarameya (only noticed/used it on sara since we only RA burned that one) you suddently started doing ~double damage. I think you needed berserk up + 2x minuets and ratt food I think, not sure if chaos aswell. Anyone know what was behind that code/calc wise? Never got fixed in "era".

Apocs were much rarer aswell on retai esp if you take the player numbers into consideration and people are more minmax oriented on eden so there is clear faroritism in relic choices. Honestly I dont think its a matter of "SE was fine with it", more like they didnt care to begin with. Alot of end game folk would have been banned for using 3rd pt tools for claiming/sandworm/ixion if SE wanted to.
