Current eden implementation is ammo always unequips when ranged is changed.
Ammo should stay equipped if you're unequipping current ranged, or swapping to the same family of ranged weapon. I.e. Archery to archery, xbow to xbow, gun to gun. The exception to the gun rule is Culverin/+1, which uses special ammo.
