What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Download icon_override.so 32 bit linux version
2. copy it to ~/.purple/plugins (I had to create the plugins directory here)
3. In Pidgin > Tools > Plugins Enable the "Protocol Icon Override" Plugin (Note
that it says the version is '0.1' I thought we were up to 0.7!? )

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
This causes a "Protocol Icon" field to appear on the Advanced Tab in the Modify
Account window.

However, Entering the path to an icon (with or without the .png extension and
regardless of the size of the icon image 16x16, 22x22 or 32x32) causes the
protocol icon to vanish (ie the standard protocol icon disappears and no icon
is shown)

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Pidgin 2.10.3 (libpurple 2.10.3)
Ubuntu 12.04

For me it works, when I do not enter the complete path, but only the name of
the icon.
The icons can be found in /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/protocols/16

In the protocol icon field in the account preferences I just enter for example
google-talk or facebook (without path and .png) and it works.
