no need to copy the .so after 'make install'
add checkinstall/deb package instructions
shorten/formatting
git clone also works
update changelog for 1.7

Sorry, i was playing with repository mirroring and deleted my fork, I will reopen a PR with additional stuff I just finished (automatic .deb package builds using a continuous integration service)
