Ah, I've struck this when my password was wrong and/or if I had a steam guard
token filled in in the advanced tab when I had to reset my account after a
hacking attempt. Try double checking the password and clearing out the steam
guard token. If that fails, can you get a debug log as you connect from
Help->Debug Window

im 100% sure my password is correct, however i reinstalled to another linux
distribution and with a normal install it does seem to work
previous install was on manjaro linux with the standard pidgin/opensteamworks
setup.
WOrks perfectly fine on linux mint 17.1 with manual install tho

I am also getting this issue with version 1.5 on Windows 8.1. I've removed and
recreated the account multiple times, and made sure that the Steam Guard field
was blank and all. Checking the accounts.xml file reveals that I typed the
correct password and everything. I've attached a debug log. No other accounts
were active, and the log starts when I enable my Steam account. I tried to
authenticate with the CAPTCHA three times while the debug window was open, all
of which obviously failed.

I have the same issue on Debian Jessie using version 1.5. I just can't get
through the captcha. I double checked my password and also disabled steam guard
on my steam account.
Launching pidgin from terminal I can see a warning everytime a new captcha is
displayed : "JSON-Critical **: json_object_get_coolean_member: assertion 'node
!= NULL' failed".
Now I am not sure it can help but it really pops at the exact same moment as
the captcha.
Also, the popup for the captcha says "Enter both words below, separated by a
space" but this is not reCAPTCHA, there is only letters and numbers.

Have you opted in to using the new sign-in method?

No I don't think so. You're talking about Steam, right ? I did nothing about my
sign-in method.

I am seeing the same thing as the OP and TechnoMonkey76 and others. Every time
the captcha is entered, another appears, ad infinitum.

I'm running into the same problem. Every time I submit the captcha, another
reappears. I tried literally 50 in a row, to no avail. Does anyone know what's
going on?

I also cannot connect via Pidgin; stuck in the same sort of endless Captcha
loop as as everyone else.

Same thing here. It just refuses to accept any captchas.

I cannot login, using Pidgin, either due to the captcha not going through. It
would really be nice to get some idea of what's going on here as this used to
work.

Hi all, I'm aware of the problem, but not the cause of the problem (something
to do with an invalid login process that throws up a captcha instead of bailing
out).
More people will be experiencing this as their access_tokens will start to
expire (they last a week or so). If more people can attach debug logs
(Help->Debug Window) as they login it might help track down the problem.

I'm attaching my debug log (redacted my user names from it). I clicked the
checkbox to activate the account once and just received "Invalid login." I
checked the box a second time and got a captcha, filled it out, hit enter, got
another captcha, filled it out, hit enter, and clicked logout. I thought
knowing the process I was going through might help when looking at the log.
Thanks for your work on this!

I've redacted my username and attached a log. I tried to authenticate through
the captcha box and it booted me out. The logfile only contains one attempt.

I get the same that post #13 describes. I get "Invalid login." at first
(usually after not having tried in a long while) and after that just
never-ending captchas. Debug log below.
Note, the "Invalid login." occurs just before the first occurrence of the line
beginning with "util: Writing file accounts.xml"
The second occurrence is just before the first captcha is submitted.
Hopefully that'll help at least help map the steps the user is groing
through/seeing to the log to get a better timeline.

@eionrobb: Your mention of access tokens expiring reminds of when Skype not too
long ago started preventing older versions of the skype clients from
connecting. The old versions were able to still connect and function until a
similar sort of token expired.
Could what's going on with Steam also be version related? I would make sense if
they are trying to prevent people from using older versions of Steam in general
and as a byproduct affecting plugins like this one.

Hi all, thanks for your patience.
If users with this problem on Windows could try with the attached dll (you'll
need to replace any other libsteam*.dll you have in your plugins folder)
If it's working alright, then I'll commit the code so the Linuxy people can
have a go too :)

Both DLLs (the debug and 1.5.1) are working for me. I am using the latter now.
Only thing I can't figure out is how to join or initiate group chats.
Thanks again.

Disable adblock - and all will be ok.
