The plugin is functioning as I can see the new menu and when I opened a chat it

Ah. Maybe that "Now translating to X" statement isn't clear enough. You'll
need to change the language of that buddy to Japanese to see their translations
from Japanese. The warning is there to let you know that when you send a
message it will translate it into language X too.

Can you try changing the language of the buddy to Japanese and see if it works?

Is there a way just to have it translate the incoming message to english?

Not at the moment. I'll add in an option to decide whether to translate
incoming or outgoing or both

... and I added in a bit more of a how-to to the front page of this site just
to make things a little clearer.
