How to repair your MacBook when it won’t boot | GabrielStaples.com home

What do you do if your MacBook won’t boot? How do you turn it on? What is “internet booting” and how do you do it? Can I boot onto a Linux USB drive to run Linux on my Macbook and recover files? If so, how? How do I reinstall my MacOS? Can I wipe the whole hard drive and just install Linux on my old Macbook that’s collecting dust? How?

Also very useful, but must be run from a MacOS, as that is required to download the install file from the Apple Store!:

How to Convert a MacOS Installer to ISO

I need to learn to use a Mac. At work they are used a lot too. I will probably always dislike them, but I need to get at least basic skills in them, which will be hard because so little about them is intuitive or makes sense to me in the slightest. Everything feels so hard in a Mac.

I think I'm going to install MacOS into a virtual machine (Virtual Box) inside Linux, running in Ubuntu 22.04 on the MacBook. This will be a new article to write I suppose when I get to it...

Internet boot with the adapter and upgraded SSD worked fine!

I said:

I have read somewhere that if you replace the internal SSD with an adapter card (I gave you the link above) and m.2 SSD, then Apple won’t allow you to internet boot and reinstall MacOS. It checks to ensure you have only an Apple SSD first. I haven’t confirmed this, but beware of this possible limitation.

It actually worked fine! I just did it yesterday.

  1. This adapter: Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade 2013-2015 Year Macs(Not Fit Early 2013 MacBook Pro) (Black), $14
  2. This is the SSD I used: Western Digital WD_BLACK 1TB SN770 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, Up to 5,150 MB/s - WDS100T3X0E, $70

Here is my Amazon review for the adapter:

Subject: This adapter worked perfectly in my 2015 Macbook Air, with a 1 TB WD_BLACK SN770 NVMe M.2 SSD in it.

Review:

This adapter worked perfectly in my 2015 Macbook Air, with a 1 TB WD_BLACK SN770 NVMe M.2 SSD in it. Despite the adapter including a card which says that Internet Boot and MacOS install that way will not work with the adapter, it actually worked just fine for me! I was able to fully reinstall MacOS 12 Monterey (still supported through \~Nov. 2024) with no issues, even without a recovery media or time machine backup or anything. I just used the Option + Cmd + R internet boot option and it worked perfectly. Very pleased!

Note that plugging in the adapter to the PC's motherboard was a very firm fit. I had to press fairly hard for it to "click" into place and fully seat. Be aware of that.

Great product. Well-made. Perfect fit!

A few photos, including of the cards that came with the adapter which warned this probably wouldn't work:

(I forgot to take a photo of it actually installed.)

it can't support recover from internet.

(This actually proved to be false in my case; recovery and full MacOs install via internet boot worked just fine!)
