The mercury vapor lamps would finally provide a use for mercury in this mod.
Time moves 72x faster in Minecraft than reality, which would make the sodium lamps light up in 2.5 seconds... which makes no sense. Having them take a third of the night to turn on would be sad, though.
A reasonable departure from reality is clearly needed. How about 20 seconds?
I generally like the idea of having more lightbulb variants. One thing that worries me is item inflation in NEI. With, potentially, five variants of each of six types of bulb...
Well, it's certainly possible to tell NEI not to show them, but then how do people find out how to make them? This seems like it should be a solved problem, though. The ideal solution would be for NEI itself to support multi-level lookup, maybe with sliders, but I'm almost certain it doesn't.
Thoughts? :X
Well, there are plans to expand the in-game wiki to be more descriptive. We could hide them in NEI but still have them show up in the wiki.
I don't think that'd be a good idea. People are always going to reach for NEI first, every time...
It'd be an awful lot of recipes as well, though. Might want to have a machine to make the bulbs.
A machine or two to make some really long lasting ones might be interesting. Perhaps have one to suck the air out of a bulb, and another to inject some sort of halogen?
Mm, something like that.
I'll consider it as part of my ongoing Mechanical Age project. Already got a working vacuum pump, even if it wasn't intended for that. :P
20 seconds seems pretty reasonable for turn on time. For the NEI issue, you could have NEI not show them but be able to use the creative inventory to be able to see all of the items.
I couldn't find anywhere else (except the forum) to recommend items for the mod so I'll leave this here. Here are some suggestions that I taught of for the lighting aspect of the mod:
Enclosures:
High bay enclosure Wall pack enclosure Office style florescent housing (multiple bulbs
Bulbs:
Mercury Vapor Lamp Same efficiency as incendescent Lasts much longer (longer then Economic CFL) 50, 100, 250W Variants Fits into High Bay, Robust or Wall Pack housing Takes about a 30 seconds to turn on and get to full brightness Produces greenish-white light Requires ballast (maybe/if possible) Cheap to craft
High Pressure Sodium Better efficency then economic CFL Lasts longer then CFL 30, 50, 100, 250, 500W Varients Fits into High Bay, Robust or Wall Pack housing Takes about 45 seconds to a 1 minute to turn on and to get to full brightness Produces orange light Requires ballast (maybe/if possible) Cheap to craft
Metal Halide Bulbs Same efficiency as economic CFL Lasts longer then CFL / around the same length as Mercury Vapor 50, 100, 250, 500W Varients Fits into High Bay, Robust or Wall Pack housing Takes about 1 minute to turn on and to get to full brightness Produces bright white light More expensive to craft Requires ballast (maybe/if possible)
Linear Florescent Bulbs Only fits into florescent housings Warm and Cool White 20, 40W Varients
LED Bulbs! Any fixture Bright white VERY efficient VERY expensie Lasts very long 10, 20, 50, 100W Varient
Other Suggestions
Florescent Lamp Housings only support linear florescent bulbs (mentioned above) Florescent Lamp Housings support 2 or 4 bulbs per housing Ballasts for Mercury Vapor, High Pressure Sodium and Metal Halide Lamps Multiple switches in one block, like light switches
