There is no "Version" in webadmin.

Removed SD card, deleted files, downloaded and extracted directory /firmware_mod to SD card, upload my own /config/wpa_supplicant.conf

...and same problem.

In my experience this is an issue with github ratelimiting.

You can run /system/sdcard/autoupdate.sh from shell via ssh manually and sometimes it shows the version as NULL and spits an error about github ratelimiting and using an github account with -u option, so I guess it's too many people updating at once or something I usually try few hours later and it works.

There is also a new option for using a GitHub api key. User credentials don't work anymore.

Yes it failed because it says in 2nd line: Github limit exceeded, try with an account (-u option)

That's what I'm saying, the script either uses the authors account info or just some free github access (I dunno how it works), but it keeps hitting the rate limits and not downloading the new files because of that.

Co which option is for user + API pass?

I don;t think there is an option for us to do this it's just something that changed on github's side and the author needs to adjust the way the script logs into github. I am getting similar errors in node-red too. I'm confident the authors will get around to it at some point.

Try using ./autoupdate.sh -u username:token

You will need to generate your personal access token at https://github.com/settings/tokens

Note that this will leave your token visible in the shell history.

@xdissent could this somehow be related to #1651?

Initially there is no /system/sdcard/VERSION file, and that’s why it doesn’t show a version in the UI. That’s normal. After an update the VERSION file should exist. Can you verify that @S474N ? If it still shows no version in the UI but a VERSION file exists on the SD, could you post the version file please?

@xdissent Dafang Cam is very unstable, so, again restarted (from/to USB), ssh, and there's no file VERSION.

Is your file system read only? Can you try to create a file manually?

One of my cameras has the problem as well, this is in the VERSION file: {"date":"2020-12-27T10:12:08Z","branch":"beta","commit":"67794f2"}

The UI looks like this then:

I had exactly the same problem of a non existing VERSION file and it was also not created during update(s). I am using "stable".

First of all, the automatic update process using GUI fails.
When performing the "autoupdate.sh", it fails due to GitHub limit
Afterwards, I used "./autoupdate.sh -u username:token" and the update failed, because of the broken update before, which created a VERSION file containg "null"-Strings. You have to delete this VERSION file before starting the update again
Then, when performing the update there was no error message and it looked like the update works (but actually it did not and the VERSION file was still not generated).
In my case I was able to track down the issue to a full file system during the update. Update files are downloaded to /tmp/, which in my case only has ~17MB and there are about 20MB to download. Unfortunately, the "autoupdate.sh" did not complain about this issue and did also not tell me it failed to download files.
When I changed the "DESTOVERRIDE" Variable on the autoupdate.sh script to point to a directory on my sd-card, the update suceeded and the VERSION file was created. Please be aware, that the autoupdate.sh tries to update itself, which you should answer with "no", since it would overwrite the "DESTOVERRIDE" setting again.

Since somebody asked, the VERSION file on stable is now: {"date":"2020-12-26T09:40:53Z","branch":"master","commit":"7d2eeba"}
