Anyone who plays this game will tell you that having to learn dark caves is a huge step up in difficulty—so much so that some refuse to play this game without a Candle at start. The Candle has never been "required" and, personally, I'd vote for it to stay that way, but with that said, I also can't think of a reason why dark palaces would be all that interesting in a game that's raced, when:
Furthermore, with dark caves, there is skill involved in learning the enemy sets and their movement, whereas, dark palace rooms would not be able to be tackled in the same manner.
Honestly, the idea sounds like something that would fit much better in a hack of the game, where obstacles are put into place to keep players from going to a location too early and/or for lore reasons, rather than a randomizer, that is raced in an e-sports setting.
Add option to make some (e.g. windowless) or all castles dark and require the candle to see in them. Great way to make the candle actually worth something and potentially required.
