It happens to me too often. I am so affraid of breaking my cut in the middle of the path that I often reduce the feedrate and layer to very very low setting.
It generally succeed but it take 2-6 hours to make the piece. But after one hour you see that there is a mistake and wait 4 hours to stop or you lost your wood...
So yeah, long process is a fail as bad as failing after 20 minutes.
