Rdairplay crashes after starting song #98

Topcomputer commented 8 years ago

Rivendell is installed on ubuntu 14.04 but I'm having a strange crash. I can import music, listen music in the library, add music to the jingle panel but when I load a music files into the cards of the playlist and then want to play the just created playlist my computer shut downs rivendell and logs out. Anyone how knows what's triggering this behavior?

I'm new in Ubuntu so is there a place where I can find errorlogs of Rivendell? I've installed Rivendell using this manual http://blog.aukondk.com/2014/02/rivendell-install-guide.html (i've changed the reposities to Trusty ;))

It logs to the syslog as standard. The entries are prefixed with caed, ripcd, airplay (or rdairplay I forget) for the main things you're looking at.

Having the PC shut down is a weird one, I'd be tempted to say its OS/Hardware rather than Riv but then I have no idea why it would work everywhere but airplay. I have several machines running under Ubuntu 14.04 (Server that I installed a basic XFCE into). If you've started with Xubuntu you'll have a lot of extra stuff to work around but it shouldn't be giving you any grief.

I've tried to start rivendell today and it crashes again. Because i'm new in Ubuntu, i'm not sure what's causing the problem. Cinnamon? I've started from Edubuntu because i'm an it technician in a school. I'm working a lot with Windows but I'm experimenting with Ubuntu to lower our softwarecost.

This is the log:

OK, on a base system you have a lot of moving pieces. In terms of audio there is a whole stack of stuff you need to be aware of in terms of what it does so that you can work around potential issues.

At the bottom you have ALSA (this is the thing that talks directly to the sound card). ALSA hates to share, which means if you have Program X playing sound, Program Y usually can't play sound until Program X goes away.

To solve the sharing issue there are two main things that are used. PulseAudio for most people, it works well enough these days and does all the fancy stuff normal people expect. Rivendell doesn't work with Pulse Audio.

JACK, not loaded by default but does the sharing bit on top of ALSA in a very low latency way and has some really fancy things it can do (you effectively can wire things together in software). Rivendell can work with JACK.

The first errors you get are these:

Dec 13 10:55:44 timdehaen-HP-EliteBook-8530p caed: unable to communicate with JACK server Dec 13 10:55:44 timdehaen-HP-EliteBook-8530p caed: JACK general failure Dec 13 10:55:44 timdehaen-HP-EliteBook-8530p caed: no connection to JACK server

This is not a problem. It just means you're not using JACK. In this case Rivendell expects to talk directly to ALSA (without PulseAudio stealing the show). Then you get these errors:

Dec 13 10:55:51 timdehaen-HP-EliteBook-8530p kernel: [ 7698.242854] rdairplay[9993]: segfault at 0 ip 000000000043519e sp 00007ffc3563a250 error 4 in rdairplay[400000+ae000] Dec 13 10:56:43 timdehaen-HP-EliteBook-8530p pulseaudio[2686]: [alsa-sink-AD1984A Analog] alsa-sink.c: Error opening PCM device front:0: Apparaat of hulpbron is bezig Dec 13 10:56:43 timdehaen-HP-EliteBook-8530p pulseaudio[2686]: [pulseaudio] sink-input.c: Failed to create sink input: sink is suspended.

Basically airplay crashes and a bit later you see pulseaudio moaning about not having ALSA control. So the first thing I would do is stop pulseaudio. You need to edit the pulse audio file, open a terminal and type the following:

$ sudo nano /etc/pulse/client.conf

If you don't like nano, gedit is probably installed on Edubuntu:

$ gksudo gedit /etc/pulse/client.conf

Also I might be misremembering and the path may be /etc/pulseaudio/client.conf.

You should see a line that says:

; Autospawn = Yes

Change it to:

Autospawn = No

Yes the missing ; is important as this changes the line from a comment to active config.

Next stop pulseaudio for the user you're logged in as:

$ pulseaudio -k

Check that pulseaudio has gone away:

$ ps -C pulseaudio

You should see no results.

Now try loading Rivendell and see what happens.

Rivendell crashes again. Is it because I didn't start Jack audio?

Op 13-12-15 om 15:39 schreef Wayne Merricks:

$ sudo nano /etc/pulse/client.conf

If you don't like nano, gedit is probably installed on Edubuntu:

$ gksudo gedit /etc/pulse/client.conf

Also I might be misremembering and the path may be /etc/pulseaudio/client.conf.

You should see a line that says:

; Autospawn = Yes

Change it to:

Autospawn = No

Yes the missing ; is important as this changes the line from a comment to active config.

Next stop pulseaudio for the user you're logged in as:

$ pulseaudio -k

Check that pulseaudio has gone away:

$ ps -C pulseaudio

You should see no results.

Now try loading Rivendell and see what happens.

Everything seems normal until here:

Perhaps it is a cinnamon problem?

I have a guide installing from Ubuntu server with XFCE core, I can send it to you if you want to start from scratch. If you're not fussed about Ubuntu, there is an appliance for Rivendell that will have everything working out of the box. Be aware that it formats your Hard drives.

You can send me the manual. I don't have a problem with starting from scratch. Rivendell is running on a old laptop for testing purpose only. The centos solution doesn't attrack me. As an it technician i want to learn something by installing rivendell. Op 13-dec.-2015 19:49 schreef "Wayne Merricks" notifications@github.com:

Apologies for the delay, I have a detailed walk through of the client install here:

http://thevoiceasia.com/rivendell/clientinstall.odt

I've removed a lot of the extra site specific detail and some of the Now/Next info (RLM) is not finished yet. It was 40 pages before I started deleting things that you don't need to worry about as a beginner, however some of the things you might find useful for later so I've left that in.

If you're not doing anything fancy, XFCE base install is pages 2 - 4 and the Rivendell install is pages 8 - 10.

If you have any problems feel free to get in touch.

Oh and please excuse some of the lengthy explanations and terms used. I have to write work documentation so that Windows people can understand it.

Topcomputer commented 8 years ago

Thank you for the manual. I'll look into your manual and try to set up a working Rivendell installation.

Hardware problem.
