On my current copy of Windows 10, MS seems to have replaced many of these very calligraphic characters with normal sans-serif for legibility. Maybe use some compatible open-source Chinese fonts for that?
The color scheme for bamboos and circles seem to have changed to match actual colorful pieces.
I don't no much about the game of Mahjong, and little more about East-Asian typogaphy, so this issue is not something I'm going to tackle on my own.
You can see the release history of :mahjong: in Windows at Emojipedia. Other pieces are using the same style, of course. Obviously, only the original release of Windows 10 used the calligraphic style.
PS: I've not yet found a public repository of all Microsoft Windows emoji glyphs. Cal Handerson's Emoji Data lacks it, for instance.
This issue is a subset of #96 and therefore #83 and both depend on the resolution of #62. That means, the Segoe UI Emoji font in Microsoft Windows includes colorful graphics for Mahjong pieces.
