Grammar Mad-Libs Game

Step One: Either as a whole group or individually, allow students to play the game for 5-10 minutes.

Step Two: Students write short narratives, incorporating terms from the lesson.

Step Three: Ask students to remove 5-10 of the words from their narrative to create cloze sentences. These sentences will be filled in by peers while playing  a "Mad Libs"-style game.

Step Four:  Students  identify the parts of speech for the eliminated words and create lists of those parts.

Step Five: Students pair up to play a word game, in which one person offers suggestions on nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc. without knowing the context of the story and the other person fills in the blanks with their partner's terms to create a new version of the narrative.

Step Six:  Ask students to share their final stories aloud with the class.  What is great about this game is that students get to pair share. They get to play a game in which they get to write stories, identify parts of speech, and then share those stories. This is a great game!
