Activity Design Ideas: U-Curve #9

For lessons, we need to break down the learning into at least 3 stages. The stage in which they are just rote memorizing, the stage in which they are experimenting on their own, and the stage where they are getting feedback. We need to provide the right level of support for each stage.

U-shape learning curve. Schmidt '93 noticing hypothesis.

The down u – corrections don't work on the down swing, just need more practice.

The bottom u – students begin experimenting with the language, they are the worst at this spot, and this is where they start to use it in their own language.

The upward U – at this point you can start correcting students, as they are starting to gain confidence at this point.
