Writing about Quotes with Pictures #145

From Sra: I was thinking about our childhood game of extempore while setting up one of my classes. In that game, teacher will give us a quotation and 2 minutes to think. Then, we have to interpret that quotations, say something for or against it, give examples and wrap it within 1 minute. So, a whole coherent speech has to be done within a minute. So, an idea came to my mind and I could not help but share it with you. I'm not sure if it will be appropriate for quill or not and if it is, then it should be for kids above 10 years old.

Attached please some of the quotation-pictures. I have many many such quotations which I gather from here and there as I need to put them up in my classroom. So, if you need more examples, let me know.

So, you can also create another kind of learning lesson/game (very similar to picture-game that we discussed before), and which can actually become a big learning lesson/project:

  1. Put up a quote.
  2. Ask students to interpret its meaning
  3. How can they use the quote in their lives; how is it inspiring them? Or what's the use of the quote, etc, etc.
  4. Each quotation is from someone. So, teach students research habit and how to avoid plagiarism by asking them to find something about that person from the web (perhaps links to some good websites can be provided) and then how to quote those resources in their paper.
  5. If the quote is from a book, and the book is available for free on the website, then students can be asked to read it and provided some kind of synopsis.

Lots and lots of such teaching moment can be created through using quotations and quotations do provide inspirations, especially to inner-city kids. And students can work in group or individually. And, if you give freedom to teachers to create/change questions, then teachers can adopt all these according to their needs in the classroom. Over time, a huge database of such quotations and relevant questions/teaching methods can be developed.
