PSG tone #332

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start up Genesis Plus GX
2. Load Sonic & Knuckles
3. Listen

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
PSG tone a little different. Carefully listen on 0:07 and 0:26.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5a2-pq9jJI

Compare to real Mega Drive, old GenPlus 1.3.1 very close.

What version of the emulator are you using (official, SVN revision,...)?
GenPlus GX 1.7.3 r764 and GenPlus 1.3.1

Please provide any additional information below (Emulator settings, Console
setting,...)

Both emulators run in Pal mode, with changed PSG volumes. (+2.30)

I can not explain more precisely, but it can be seen as more rude part of music
in the 26th second. In headphones it more noticeable.

Also in Regen v0.972 this difference more noticeable.

1) Run this game in Regen emulator
2) In "sound" option choose "volume levels" -> SN76489 (PSG)
3) Change it to 1.32
4) Listen intro music
5) Now reset game
6) Go to option "volume levels"
7) Increase PSG from 1.32 to +3.50

And you will notice this rude part of PSG.

What ? I don't get what you are saying, dude. You say that when you change the
volume it sounds different ? And in the SAME emulator ? I think it's normal you
know. You are limited by the depth of your audio output which is 16 bit
normally so if you hsetup to much gain for one stream (like psg) you may end
up with clipping since all streams (6 channel fm and 4 channels psg) must fit
in that 16-bit range

And what has Regen to do with this ?

Well, Regen and old Genplus 1.3.1 sounds same. But in new Genplus GX, i noticed
what something changed and this change make emulator a little far from real
thing.

I change volume for search differences, because on normal levels, it really
hard to detect.

How can it be "far from the real thing" and yet hard to detect at normal volume
?
All i see here is a comparison between emulators (and like i said, i cannot
hear the differences you say there are), not the real thing.
I tried the game on my PAL MD2 switched to 60hz and it sounds exactly the same
as the current emulator version.

Off course there will always be people (like you) saying it's not "exactly" the
same but I think that's because they are specifically looking for bugs or
inaccuracies and indeed ends up hearing things. Because the truth is, no
emulator will ever be perfect or sound the same when it comes to analog audio
replication , even different md models sound different on that matter...

The digital part (sound chip) IS accurate and with default settings, it sounds
close enough to my original console so for me it's accurate enough.

Okay if it accurate, i glad to hear it. I just not so "exactly" remember it.
(from far 2003 year)

Can you check another game on real hardware? Pirated rom "4-in-1 [p1][!].bin"

1) Load rom
2) Run game from list
3) Exit in emulator menu
4) Load rom again
5) Repeat it until screen will be screwed like this:

Could not reproduce it on my wii, it is probably caused by Dolphin sdcard
emulation or whatever you are doing on your PC with Dolphin.

I hope you understand that using a Wii emulator to test or look for bugs in a MD emulator running on Wii is not very reliable and i am not going to lose more of my time with this :-/

Well, i checked atleast ~500 roms (all of them run perfect)

In basic windows port of Genplus, Wii features not included (audio preamps,
overscan emulation, scaling and ability to move picture in any directions, etc)
If PC users don't care about these things, here only one man who need it as air
for live...

I don't want to use another emulators, because they can't give what i really
want. Please, just add mono output, i sure it not take so much time. Try to
understand me bro, my soul filled by pain. :(

just so you know, i already fully tested MD, MS, GG, SG romsets (as well as all
released MCD/SCD games) to ensure 100% compatibility so you don't need to do
this all over again, at least, I don't really need anyone to do this, unless
you are playing all games 100% from start to end, which, honestly, seems a
little bit crazy and maniac thing to do ^^

as for mono output, i will see what i can do, i guess an optional "mono" mixing
would not hurt that much to add, it's really basic thing, just that, in my
opinion, it adds CPU processing (and potential emulation slowdown) for
something that won't change much your audio experience (stereo panning being
not used so often by games and anyway, barely noticeable when you are focused
on playing the games)
