This also happens to me, but only in some games, the problem can be a memory
overload or a driver is unavalible for the game trying to load.

Look for the errors.txt file in the mame folder. What are the last couple of
lines
after trying to play a ROM?
Also which ROMs are you trying?

The game you're trying to play uses up too much memory. It basically can't be
fixed.
