SNES and Mega Drive support? #1

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

The latest version of mednafen includes emulation of these two systems.

While there are certainly great SNES and MD emulators out there for the Wii, it
would be great to fire up these systems once you get the rewind feature
implemented. ;)

Yeah, I decided to skip those two for the initial release as there are already
great ports for the Wii. I will be adding MD in the future, but I am doubting
that I will include SNES. It is based off BSNES and I am sure the performance
will be less than adequate.

Yeah, no way will BSNES run at any playable speed on a Wii. Unless you use the
performance core, and that's pushing it a lot and you might as well use SNES9X
at that point.

Thanks, it's great to finally see someone complete a Mednafen port, after all
these years.

Just so that you know, Mednafen's MD core is using an outdated version of
Genesis Plus, which has a lot of compatibility/accuracy issues, especially with
sound emulation or some games that won't work properly. To compare, it's very
similar with the initial port released by Softdev on Game Cube (uses the same
code base, more or less).

Now, it should be possible to backport Genesis Plus GX updated cores in this
but it would also probably requires lot of work and some insight of emulation
inner working, not sure if you want to go that way. Same goes for Mednafen
MS/GG emulators by the way since they are based on an old version of SMS Plus.

That said, it would be interesting to see how BSNES is running on Wii. PC-FX
seems to run slow but it's still an interesting achievement.

Thanks eke-eke!

Yeah, I am aware that the MD code base is quite out of date as compared to the
tremendous amount of work you have put into it. Which is why I figured it was
not really worth including. BTW, the manual you created to go along with your
port is extremely professional!

To be honest, I was initially just going to release a WonderSwan port. However,
so much of the code would have been replicated with the Virtual Boy port that I
figured, I might as well go ahead and port the majority of Mednafen. I knew it
fixed some Lynx issues and that the PCE support is pretty solid.

PC-FX is definitely slow (especially during FMV playback). Up to this point,
most of my time has really been spent tracking down memory leaks, file leaks,
and crashes that occurred when switching between different emus, as Mednafen
doesn't support loading multiple games in a single session (one per launch). It
also took some time to address the memory fragmentation that occurs when
switching between games (especially the GBA 32mb ones) on the Wii.

Hey raz0red!
Thank you very much indeed for your work. This is a really nice port, very
stable and solid from the very first release. Impressive!

I don't suppose this would be easy or even possible but twinaphex has been
working on porting PS3 SNES9x-Next to the Wii
(https://github.com/twinaphex/snes9x-next). Is there anyway this could be
ported/integrated into Mednafen's infrastructure?

Keep up the great work and looking forward to 0.1.

Re: LionKaiser

This can already be accomplished, although it is a bit cumbersome. See the
"GameBoy Advance" section in the Mednafen documentation:
