Thanks for the detailed review, Josh. With packages as complex as these it isn't an easy task to write about one of them in any detail, let alone compare them fairly. This is helpful.

Nice summary Josh. Thought you should know that Jaspersoft packages the same Mondrian OLAP engine as Pentaho, and is community not commercial only. You can find it within the JasperReports Server project: http://jasperforge.org/projects/jasperserver

Thanks, I should have made clear that both used Mondrian. As to its presence in the community version, I've been unable to find OLAP in the community edition in any reasonably useful form; other conversations with JasperSoft seemed to confirm that it wasn't there to be found, at least not in any terribly useful form. If I've misinterpreted those conversations, though, I'd love to know what the community version can do.

I'm glad it was helpful, genesis. I looked (fairly quickly) at the page you linked to; thanks for that link. It seems most of those allow application developers and other "power users" to create reports, but most don't allow the normal user to create reports on his or her own. Perhaps unjustly, I've made that one of my own criteria for choosing such a package. As a result, most of the entries in the list didn't get me terribly excited. inetsoft looks like a notable exception, and is something I'd like to explore further one day.

That's a useful link, Julia. Thanks. It mentioned NetSuite as an alternative, which is one I haven't looked at in detail. It doesn't seem to speak about the differences between the community and enterprise versions, which would be nice.
