Excitinger layout considerations #12

maybe not a full-size Babel background, or... maybe a full-size Babel background.

half joking but anything except white bg and black text would be an improvement.

Just looking at this again as a General Human Non-developer User™ and I think it looks bawmb 💣

Let's include this in our chit chat tomorrow!

just kinda went for it w/the full bg, albeit with semi-arbitrary img, but just looking to answer "could we pull off the full bg concept?" more easily via a demo.

pushed that and a bunch of other layout improvements and standardization to #10.

Cool, we'll have lots to chew on. I could see it looking good, but it's gonna be hard to choose a full bg image that satisfies everyone, unless someone it could be of the NYC language map (too busy?). Might be a chicken-egg problem, but I kind of also want to see good size/placement for other home-page elements to see how much we really need it or how it looks. To me, the language map is something bigger than just a Featured, even a perma-Featured, so I'm happy to give it a prominent role if it'll look good

yeah full bg img might not reach consensus, but it's really just background fluff as a nice alternative to a solid color (or no color). i can add as much an overlay/mask as needed to keep the focus on important stuff, and the img doesn't really have to represent much, just be applicable enough to include on the site.

alternatives are:

  1. gradients, or
  2. patterns https://www.toptal.com/designers/subtlepatterns/

nyc map would be too busy (and it's also a bit redundant if it's a blog in the Recent list AND a perma-feature AND a bg) but perhaps we could black-n-white it?

perma-feature is fine, just wondering what the most important stuff is on Home. we've got:

  1. Title
  2. Content from Editor (if we use my Hero on Home, it's same spot as excerpt on non-Homes)
  3. Prominent video (hopefully a higher-quality one than current), presumably much larger than i have it now
  4. perma-featured nyc map
  5. 2-3 (???) additional featureds
  6. recent updates: fb feed
  7. recent updates: 3-5 (???) in undetermined format: grid of square cards? list? super slim list w/just links and excerpt, no feat img? "long" cards?

i heard from someone much better at design than i am say that the Home page is one of these important places to focus on. obvi first impressions important, so presumably he meant Home is just the gateway drug to the hard stuff deeper in the site.

also i feel like having lots of images will start to make each section on Home less special. "above the fold" is still Priority 1, so let's start there.

RIP Babel, you were always my favorite non-books bg! 😞
