(Adjectival Infinitive)
Examples:
This is the best time to start.
-> 최적의 시간이다 (시작하기에)
This
is
the
best
time
to start.
adjective
noun
adjectival infinitive
It is time to start the engines.
-> 시간이다 (엔진을 시작 할)
It
is
time
to start the engine.
noun
adjectival infinitive phrase
부사적 용법 (Adverbial Infinitive)
일반적으로 부사 (adverb) 는 동사, 형용사, 부사, 문장전체를 꾸며준다고 알고 있습니다. 하지만 Infinitive의 부사적 용법은 동사와 형용사만 꾸며줄 수 있습니다.
형용사를 꾸며주는 경우
Examples
It is hard to do.
-> 이것은 하기 어렵다.
-> 'to do'가 'hard'를 꾸며주는 형태
-> 이것은 어렵다 (하기에).
It
is
hard
to do.
adjective
adverbial infinitive
I am glad to see you.
-> 난 널 봐서 반갑다.
-> 'to see you'가 'glad'를 꾸며주는 형태
-> 반갑다 (널 봐서)
I
am
glad
to see you.
adjective
adverbial infinitive phrase
I was surprised to see her at the party.
-> 난 그녀는 놀랐다 그녀를 그 파티에서 보게되서.
-> 'to see her at the party'가 'suprised'를 꾸며주는 형태
-> 놀랐다 (그녀를 그 파티에서 보게되서)
I
was
surprised
to see her at the party.
adjective
adverbial infinitive phrase
부사와 마찬가지로 adverbial infinitive 도 동사를 꾸며줍니다. adverbial infinitive 는 일반적으로 문장의 시작이나 끝에 넣어서 사용할 수 있습니다.
동사를 꾸며주는 경우
목적, 결과, 이유의 용법들이 있지만, 제일 흔히 쓰이는 목적의 용법만 보겠습니다.
Adverbial infinitive에서 목적의 용법으로 쓰이는 경우는 "~하기 위해서" 라고 흔히 해석이 됩니다.
Examples:
문장 시작부분에 나오는 경우
To win, you need the highest number of points.
To prepare for the storm, we nailed plywood over the store windows.
문장 끝부분에 나오는 경우
You need the highest number of points to win.
We nailed plywood on the store windows to prepare for the storm.
명사적 용법 (Nominal Infinitive)

Present Participle (현재분사)
현재분사는 동명사와 마찬가지로 동사끝에 ing를 붙이는 형태를 나타냅니다. 동명사와 형태가 똑같아 헷갈리기 쉽습니다. 동명사는 명사적 용법으로 쓰이는 반면에 현재분사는 형용사적 용법 그리고 동사 진행형 용법으로 크게 두가지로 사용됩니다.
형용사적 용법
동사 진형형 용법
Present Participle Phrase (현재 분사구)
현재 분사구는 현재분사의 동사 진행형 용법의 연장선상입니다.
