Expanding on this, one thing that would help immensely with both restoring and managing current sources available is a consistent reliable way to filter out old sources (ones that are already in the list, but not in the output from pactl) when polling.

This way we could more accurately identify sources as they come in. But I'm not sure how this would work, because again the issue is that lots of apps do not give enough identifiable information.
