In VLC itself VDPAU need to be set. Works not as intended because it also needs to be started from command line and does not seem to work for every video. Further investigation needed.
A proposed solution is to reset the preferences.
Not successful.
Likely a cause of an incompatible NVIDIA driver version.
Use 470.xx line.
Maybe it is an incompatibility, race condition or similar issue in VLCs Qt based GUI?!
Finally found the issue: It's a preference bug in VLC. See https://superuser.com/a/126528
In
/etc/environment
setVDPAU_DRIVER=nvidia
.
