Maven can produce zips/tarballs so it should produce the distributions for
this project.

Completed. Assemblies need to go into src/main/assembly.
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAVENUSER/Assembly+Plugin has some very good 
high
level doc which seems to be missing
