We can refine this def from an ANU resource
A stand is a contiguous area that contains a number of trees that are relatively homogeneous or have a common set of characteristics.
to something like:
A stand is a collection of upright trees which are present across a contiguous area of land and which share common parts, phenotypes, phylogeny, or other attributes.
I don't like "attributes" there, does phenotype do the same semantic work? Also, I think some statement that this collection is generally expected to interact ecologically or can function like an ecological unit should be in a comment, but I'm not sure this is always the case.
I've seen stand used for both living and dead trees on the web. Not sure if there's a consensus here.
