Addition to definitions of habitat types in seamount catalogue #579

We survey shallow water coral reef habitat for the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (0-30 m), this includes the two islands around Howland and Baker in the Pacific. The definitions for Baker Guyot GAZ:00154002 and Howland seamount GAZ:00154006 does not include the nearshore shallow water habitat and island that sits on top of the seamount.

Hi @adelheenan

The definitions for Baker Guyot GAZ:00154002 and Howland seamount GAZ:00154006 does not include the nearshore shallow water habitat and island that sits on top of the seamount.

GAZ usually doesn't handle the environment types, but the place names associated with them. If you have the ability to compose terms on your side, you can assert that these overlap ENVO's island or atoll and the intertidal zone.

If you don't we could update the GAZ term, pending some discussion with the leads of the project (CC @cmungall )

We're not currently actively updating GAZ, but if you have a use case for it then we can revisit and see if we can get some community updates going. Alternatively we could try and subsume GAZ into Wikidata.

On reflection, I do think its best to link any GIS data you have directly to environment types via ENVO rather than relying on a gazetteer as an intermediary. This would give you greater flexibility as places identified by place names and the environment types which overlap them often change over time.

Ok - thanks. I have a case use for it - we are publishing a dataset next week in Scientific Data that includes these two islands and links to the GAZ metadata. Could you explain to me how we could link via ENVO rather than GAZ?
