NTR: permafrost freezing process #748

Related to #742. @pbuttigieg I'll assign this one to you, for now.

Thanks! The issue here is whether a bulk phase transition is needed during freezing of permafrost, or whether dropping below the freezing point of water is sufficient.

pbuttigieg commented 5 years ago

@rduerr, perhaps your GCW work can provide some insight?

rduerr commented 5 years ago

Hmmm.... I am not quite sure of the context or question here. Is this in the context of the active layer potentially including the top part of the permafrost?

pbuttigieg commented 5 years ago

A bit broader - the usage of "thaw" and "freeze" in permafrost discussions seems to optionally include phase transitions, being more about the temperature of the material (whether it has notable liquid inclusions in it our not). We'd like to get some guidance there.

Perhaps we need more permafrost experts? I can invite some AWI scientists to our next hackathon.

That would be great!
