Greenhouse gas causally influences climate change - BFO role and causality #916

Hello,

I noticed that you have greenhouse gas as a role.

My problem is that I would like to say that greenhouse gas causally influences climate change. However, there can be no relation of causality between a role and an occurrent.

Can I ask what would be your line of thinking behind this?

Kind regards, Clarissa.

Hi @Clarissa-Feio sorry for the delay.

We import the 'greenhouse gas' role from CHEBI.

My problem is that I would like to say that greenhouse gas causally influences climate change. However, there can be no relation of causality between a role and an occurrent.

I would express that as:

( gaseous environmental material and 'has role' some greenhouse gas ) 'causal agent in process' some climate change

We could create "greenhouse gas" as a subclass of gaseous environmental material to provide a shorthand for the material entity + role composition. We generally avoid this as it could lead to very rapid term proliferation, but given the importance and ubiquity of this term, we can make an exception.

Dear Pier,

Thank you so much for your help.

I am so sorry to bother you with this, this is my first ontology, could you tell me how we can add the ( gaseous environmental material http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/ENVO_01000797 and 'has role' some greenhouse gas http://url/ )?

I would have thought that we would need to create a new class, and say that this new class is equivalent to ( gaseous environmental material http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/ENVO_01000797 and 'has role' some greenhouse gas http://url/ ), but from what you say maybe I am wrong?

Kind regards, Clarissa.
