Current failed login is shown as a separate page, could be a pop-up window, or an extra element in the form with highlights on the errors.

No it doesn't...

By 'current version' I meant the production version running on the Pi, which still flashes a separate screen instead of an error on index.html. logincheck-error-page

I imagine you'll want that php script that adds the variable to resolve this. I'm going to default use email as the variable sent.
