What steps will reproduce the problem?
Can´t open (my music, my videos and pictures)
the folder is supposedly empty.
perhaps because of the Windows Localization (German)
"C:\Users\USER\Pictures", foldername is "Eigene Bilder"
"C:\Users\USER\Music", foldername is "Eigene Musik"
with other remote tools it works.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
android-vlc-remote say "No files found".
vlc does not show logs.

VLC 2.1.0 Rincewind
What version of Android are you using?
Android 4.3.1 (Cyanogenmod)
