I now realize that what I'm seeing in the first image are the white regions in the second image. low densities are simply not showing up.
The low density values disappearing is due to very high temperatures being used. The black body radiation outputs blue colours, but the the absorption coefficient of copper at that temperature is still highly dominated by green colours. So the multiplication of the two discards the green values. with lower temperatures I get this result: Perspective view: I understand that this is nowhere near the images in #6, I'll try with sulfur and if that does not work, adding new atoms with the right emission should solve the issue.
Thanks. This is close to the result I need. In fact it's better than anything I was getting as we can actually see individual flames.
The parameters used for the previous images were: Density scale 600 Density offset 0 Temperature scale 10107143.000 Temperature offset 0 Interpolation Trilinear Fuel Copper Visual factor 0 Intensity 1.003 Opacity 8 Shadow 0 Decay 2 Shadows false

Using the previous density volume, I am trying to render Cu flames. Here are my results:
Just about every other flame is missing. Except in the front, where most of the flames are missing. When I switch to propane (keeping the same density offsets etc) I get this:
Clearly there are densities in the black regions...
