Recession Analysis: How to interpret results from time series of gauge differences (section water balance)

Currently, SBAT also allows to apply the recession algorithm on the section water balance. In this case the target parameter is not discharge but the deltaQ of a section which outflow is defined by the downstream gauge. Can we analyse temporal changes in the water balance with the same approaches as temporal changes of the discharge? I did not find anything useful in the literature
