@bniebuhr has taken care of replacing the discontinued "maptools" with current packages in #43 He will also take a look at #31 :-)

Regarding "making pretty": everyone I have talked to about making "pretty" maps is not doing so in R but in e.g. QGIS. For our workflow here, it is important that we can plot the maps from R and we'll therefore not pursue "beauty" further at this point.
