It would be useful to be able to toggle the digital output pins automatically, according to different protocols. For instance having a UART serial terminal would be a useful feature that would allow this device to replace yet another piece of electronics equipment (an FTDI type adapter).

This isn't technically feasible, unfortunately. Internally the pins are wired to simple GPIOs!
